Monarch caterpillars and pupae

One of the great things about teaching is that it motivates you to draw and sketch subjects that you’ve been meaning to do but haven’t.  I’ve been teaching a class on drawing monarchs and milkweed and have had a great time drawing both.  I was able to acquire 3 caterpillars from the Wild Bird Center in Wheaton (Thank you!) and have sketched them through the pupa stage.  Now to wait and see if they emerge in time to migrate south.  A friend also loaned a chrysalis that was almost ready to go…but didn’t before I had to return it.  At least the class got to see that stage as well.  Above are the caterpillars and below is a milkweed that I sketched at the Schulenberg Prairie (Morton Arboretum) today.
