We took a train to Versailles and followed the streams of people to the palace courtyard…and stared in wonder at all the gold and beautiful architecture.

Versailles started as a hunting lodge in 1624 when Louis XIII bought it and began enlarging it.  Louis XIV, however, built even more additions to the palace and gardens over the course of several decades.  He moved his court there in 1682.  There really is no way to duplicate the magnificence and grand scale of this place even with a panorama, but hopefully you’ll enjoy my attempts!

Inside we walked by a chapel and room after room of paintings and sculptures.  Some of the rooms even had names!

and of course, the King’s Bedroom…with the requisite bust and painting of himself!  We lost count of how many there were throughout the palace…

After several hours I was ready to go outside again…we were fortunate to go on a day when the fountains were periodically turned on.

We didn’t have much time to explore Marie Antoinette’s palace, but Brett got a few pictures while I started a sketch of a fountain.

I don’t normally like to work on sketches later, but Versailles was so beautiful that I felt it deserved a more finished sketch.  Enjoy!
