The Calico Pennant has been on my “most wanted” dragonfly list for some time now. Then Cindy Crosby, who blogs about the prairie on Tuesdays in the Tallgrass, mentioned that she’d seen one at the Arboretum a while ago and I’ve been searching ever since. I found the female last week and today was my lucky day to find both a female and 2 male Calico Pennants! (Thanks, Cindy, for the location tip!) They have such beautiful wings and brightly colored abdomens, the female being golden and the male, red. Today it was overcast and they were content to perch long enough for me to photograph and sketch them in ink. Then I had to come home and do a larger sketch in color as well. Such a wonderful day…Enjoy!
