The last two times I’ve visited the Schulenberg prairie, the dragonflies took to the skies once the sun was out and were flying and swooping all over the sky. At one point I counted 14 in the sky at once! I tried to see if I could get even a little of the action, but it was difficult and I have a lot of blurry pictures to show for my efforts. A few are worth posting as well as some other beautiful insects that I found there. Most of the flying dragonflies were green darners, but occasionally some black saddlebags and wandering gliders would join them. Enjoy!
Flying high at the prairie…

I’ve always wondered about the distances they fly. I’ve seen them in Florida coasts in high numbers and have read they migrate quite long distances. I just posted about ladybugs. Can you differentiate the Asian beetles from the American ones?
I haven’t looked into the differences between the two ladybugs so I’d have to study up on that to answer. That’s cool that you’ve seen them in high numbers in Florida-what a treat!
I love dragonflies and damselflies so much! They are so difficult to photograph, though! I visited a wildlife reserve in June and saw many dragonflies flying at once, as you did. So exciting and so frustrating at the same time. I love that shot of the Rubyspot damselfly!
Thanks, Clare! They’re some of my favorite insects-so graceful and colorful!
You are always flying high! Love the prairies and love this post!
Lol, thanks, Resa! Have to enjoy the bugs while I can!
Lol!!!
