Costa Rica has always been a destination that I’ve wanted to visit due to the amazing biodiversity of their rainforests. Recently, Mindy Lighthipe led an art and photography tour there and I was thrilled to join her group. Going in the middle of winter makes the contrasts even greater as it was 13 degrees F when I left Chicago. The colors, heat, and bird songs were a balm to my spirit and I could hardly decide where to begin sketching, but I started with a gorgeous red and yellow hanging flower, and was off and running! Below are the sketches from my unforgettable trip. Enjoy!
As always, there’s a mix of pleinair and work inside, both in Costa Rica and at home. The large insects were drawn from life to the amusement of many…
Nice work, Karen! I went on a trip to Costa Rico with Mindy many years ago. I enjoyed the experience.
Thanks, Victoria! She’s been going for years and I’ve thought about going for years too-finally did it! Glad you’ve been able to go too.
Karen, you excelled yourself! What a wondrous and colorful collection! The birds and insects are captured beautifully. What a host of memories. There’s enough material here for a great calendar! Glad you enjoyed a hectic and exotic few days!

Awww.. thanks, Resa! Glad you enjoyed them! Hope you’re hanging in there with all the changes lately due to the virus. I’m working on combining these sketches into a pattern. Hope it works!
That sounds like an interesting project, especially now while we while away the time!
Be well!
